An itsuwaribito is a person who lies, tricks, beats and steal, and the Japan that Mana comes from is one filled with liars.
Mana grew up hated by everyone in her village, and they all thought that she was useless for everything except as the scapegoat for their own crimes. They stole everything from her, except the clothes she wore; her fields, her house, everything. Then, Mana met the Itsuwaribito of Disaster (who actually tried to save people with his lies), and while she thought he was someone who had died and even rose a grave for him, he thought that she was amusing and that as long as he had her around... what exactly? Possibly, he could have at least one person that he could trust, or who could believe in him.
The same day that they met, Mana was called back to the village and told to say that it was she who stole money from the village head. When she wouldn’t agree, because she didn’t do it and lies are not right, she was beat up just like many times before. She was taken to a stage and presented as the perpetrator of the theft, and it was decided that she was to be punished with lashes from the whip. However, just before the first lash was about to fall, the Itsuwaribito of Disaster (whom she first called Ghost Person, then Nue-san) appeared, and saved her from the crowd.

Nue gave her nine gifts, for her happiness and protection. Those nine gifts was later to be called the legendary Kokonotsu treasure.
He built her a castle in the cieling of a cave, where the two of them lived happily.
However, as known by many, happiness is not something that lasts forever. One day when Nue left to get something done, people from a village close by came to Mana, and tricked her into coming down by saying that they only wanted to become her friends. Mana, who wanted mnothing more than just that -- friends -- came down to say hello. However, what the villagers wanted was her treasures, and to get them, they brutally murdered hers. She was pregnant at the time, with a baby boy, and Nue managed to save the infant that somehow went on to live his life in the outside world hundreds of years later.
